Some-days its hard to find the fight to keep on fighting. Some days its hard to find the strength to get up just to keep on going.
I have been in some what of a funk the last week not sure why but then again maybe its when you put your all and all into something and you don’t get the return that you expect or its no where near what you expect.
This entertainment business can be cold hearted sometimes. There are no guarantees at all. You can only do what you can do and hope for the best. Thus the saying “only the strong survive.”
I said it several times to folks in my inner circle and to certain family members, I don’t want success on the next level for me, I want it for all of the people who have stood by me, behind me, gone before me. Those that have prayed for me and with me, those that have sacrificed so much in order that I may the opportunity to pursue my happiness.
I was thinking about that passage that says life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I wonder why did Thomas Jeffrson say the pursuit of happiness? He must have known that if we wanted happiness then it would have to be something that we would have to pursue.
When I get in funks like this I think of those before me that found the strength like Dr. King I”m sure didn’t feel like getting up and facing the crowd day after day but he found the strength.
Closer to what I do I’m sure there were days Spike Lee thought, is doing this all worth being broke and not having a dime and owing everyone? But his breakthrough came and those days are a distant memory.
When its hard for me to sit at the computer and type at the keys I think of my friend and college mate Darrel “Sky” Armstrong who played basketball at Fayetteville State Universityduring the time I was Sports Information Director and how the two of us would dream of HIM playing in the NBA. He was so determined. I remember the day Coach Jeff Capel bought him a suit for drat day of the Expansion Developmental League Team the Raleigh Bullfrogs. He was the first player chosen that day.
Years later, not only would he make it to the NBA but he was named 6 man of the year he would also be featured by Amad Rashad on Inside the NBA .
When he played with the Orlando Magic, he also got a chance to play in the NBA Finals. I’m sure he had days when he said “why am I playing basketball for little or nothing is it worth it?”
Closer to home I can only imagine what my mother went through at times working in a textile mill in Henderson NC being the bread winner for 3 kids, herself and a husband. How did she find the strength to get up and do what she had to do?
So as I fight this funk I think about those that I know on a personal basis who have a story to tell that may never get shared with the world but I know it and as I reflect on their stories I find the strength to keep moving until my breakthrough comes.
So if you find yourself in a FUNK just look around you. There are family members, friends and loved ones that have overcome odds and lived to tell about it. What got them through? They are no different than you and me. They have cried, they have been hurt and they have lost sleep staying up trying to figure out how to make it all work.
So like them we too shall survive and this too shall past and we only need to look around us to find the strength to keep going.
